What fan size is best for a 12×12 room?
A 1200 mm (48-inch) fan is the standard choice for a 12×12 ft (roughly 13 m²) room in India. It covers the area well at typical ceiling heights. What is the difference between 1200mm and 1400mm fans?
1200 mm fans are the most common size in Indian homes and suit rooms up to about 144 sq ft. 1400 mm fans move more air per minute (higher CMM) and are better suited to larger rooms (150–200 sq ft), halls, or high-ceiling spaces. A bigger fan at a lower speed is often quieter and more energy-efficient than a smaller fan running at high speed.
How do I choose the right ceiling fan size?
Match fan blade span to room area. A rough guide: rooms up to ~100 sq ft → 900 mm fan; 100–144 sq ft → 1200 mm fan; 145–200 sq ft → 1400 mm fan. For rooms with AC, prioritise air distribution over raw CMM. For non-AC rooms, choose the largest size that fits and aim for a CMM that covers the room area at least 8–10 times per minute.
What is CMM in a ceiling fan?
CMM stands for Cubic Metres per Minute — the volume of air a fan moves each minute. A higher CMM means better air circulation. For an Indian room without AC, you typically want enough CMM to cover the floor area multiplied by the effective height several times per minute. BEE star ratings for fans are partly based on CMM relative to power consumption.
What fan size suits a hall or drawing room?
Halls and drawing rooms in India are typically 150–250 sq ft. A 1400 mm fan is the minimum starting point; for larger halls you may need two 1200–1400 mm fans positioned to overlap coverage. Check that the ceiling height is at least 9 ft to maintain safe blade clearance with a standard downrod.
